ChatGPT student offer fact check

Is ChatGPT Plus Free for Students in 2026? Current Offer Status

The old Plus promotion is not a current general offer. Here is the active OpenAI student benefit, who qualifies, and the correct verification path.

Current status — checked August 8, 2026

No general ChatGPT Plus free trial for students is currently published. OpenAI’s active student-specific offer is $100 in ChatGPT credits for eligible university students to extend Codex usage. It does not include ChatGPT Plus and it is not OpenAI API credit.

Search results still contain articles about a past ChatGPT Plus student promotion, so it is easy to confuse a historical campaign with an offer that can be activated today. OpenAI’s current help center and student claim page point eligible students to Codex credits for students. The former general Plus-student terms page is no longer an active redemption route.

You do not need a student offer to use ChatGPT. OpenAI continues to provide a free plan with usage limits. Paid Plus, Pro, and other plans add capacity or features according to the current pricing page. A promotion can appear only for selected users or regions, but it should always be verified inside ChatGPT or on an official OpenAI domain before you add a payment method.

What is the current OpenAI student offer?

OpenAI currently offers verified university students in the United States and Canada 2,500 ChatGPT credits, described as a $100 value. These credits extend Codex usage beyond the allowance included with a ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, or Pro plan. They are applied to the verified student’s personal ChatGPT workspace and expire 12 months after they are granted.

Benefit2,500 ChatGPT credits, equivalent to $100, for Codex usage
Eligible locationUnited States or Canada; the student must reside there when claiming
Eligible schoolCurrent student at a degree-granting university in the United States or Canada
VerificationSheerID student verification; limit one offer per student
Required accountChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, or Pro personal account
Expiration12 months after the credits are granted
Not includedNo ChatGPT Plus upgrade; no transferable balance; no API credits

The distinction between ChatGPT credits and API credits matters. The offer extends Codex use inside the ChatGPT product. It does not create a prepaid balance on the OpenAI developer platform, and it cannot be transferred to a different account or sold.

How eligible students claim the Codex credits

  1. Choose the correct personal ChatGPT account. Sign in to the account you plan to use for Codex. OpenAI says the personal ChatGPT login does not itself need to be your school email.
  2. Open the official claim page. Go directly to chatgpt.com/codex/students. Avoid copied forms or third-party “activation” pages.
  3. Complete SheerID verification. Provide accurate identity, university, residence, and enrollment details. Use the institution-issued email or documents requested in the flow.
  4. Return to the same account. After approval, stay signed in to the account that completed verification. OpenAI cannot currently transfer the verified benefit to another account.
  5. Confirm the credit balance. Open the usage page in your personal workspace and verify that the 2,500 credits appear before relying on them.

If your ChatGPT account contains multiple workspaces, the credits go to the personal workspace tied to the education verification, not a separate business or API workspace. Record the grant date so you know when the 12-month validity period ends.

ChatGPT Free, Plus, Edu, and student credits are different

ChatGPT Free

The free plan is general access, not a student discount. It is the simplest way to try ChatGPT without a paid subscription, although models, tools, and rate limits may differ from paid plans and can change.

ChatGPT Plus

Plus is an individual paid subscription. OpenAI may occasionally issue limited promotional invites to selected users, but eligibility, duration, region, payment requirements, and renewal behavior depend on each campaign. A referral or trial invitation is not the same as a permanent student plan.

ChatGPT Edu

ChatGPT Edu is for universities to deploy across a campus. Students cannot activate it simply by typing a school address on the consumer checkout page. A participating institution’s administrators provision the workspace and set access policies.

Codex credits for students

The current 2026 benefit is a limited credit grant for eligible verified university students. It works with several personal ChatGPT plan levels and extends Codex use; it does not replace the underlying subscription.

Previous promotion: the widely discussed two-month ChatGPT Plus student promotion was associated with a limited 2025 redemption window. There is no working 2026 activation process for that old campaign. If OpenAI launches a new offer, expect a new official claim page and current terms.

Can a temporary EDU email activate ChatGPT Plus?

No. A disposable inbox can receive a message, but it does not prove that its holder is enrolled at an eligible university. OpenAI’s current student verification uses SheerID and considers the person, school, location, and enrollment status. A school-looking domain is not a substitute for those checks.

EduMails is a privacy and email-testing tool. It can help someone receive a low-risk confirmation message or test a signup flow, but it should not be presented as a way to bypass student verification, create repeat trial accounts, or evade a product’s terms. Using inaccurate identity or enrollment information can cause the offer to be denied or an account to be restricted.

For a ChatGPT account you plan to keep, use a durable email address you control. AI accounts can contain conversation history, files, subscriptions, and saved settings; losing access to a temporary inbox can make recovery difficult. Enable multifactor authentication where available and never reuse your school or ChatGPT password on another service.

Common verification and activation problems

“I am not eligible”

Confirm that your university is degree-granting, that it is located in the United States or Canada, and that you currently reside in the United States or Canada. The offer is not a worldwide student promotion. If your school type or location is outside the terms, another email address will not change eligibility.

“Verification limit exceeded”

This can occur when the same personal details were already verified on another ChatGPT account. Sign out and return to the account originally used. OpenAI says it cannot reset or transfer the SheerID verification to a different account at this time.

“The credits are missing”

Check that you are viewing the personal workspace rather than a business or institutional workspace. Return to the official student page while signed into the verified account. If the claim is approved but the balance still does not appear, contact OpenAI support from that account.

“A free-trial link asks for payment”

Some OpenAI promotional trials require a valid payment method and automatically convert to a paid subscription unless cancelled. Read the displayed campaign terms, note the renewal price and date, and cancel through subscription settings before renewal if you do not want to continue.

Frequently asked questions

Do college students get ChatGPT Plus free in 2026?

There is no current general free ChatGPT Plus student plan. The active offer is $100 in Codex credits for eligible verified university students in the U.S. and Canada.

Can I claim the Codex offer on ChatGPT Free?

Yes. OpenAI says students can start with ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, or Pro, provided they meet the offer’s university, residence, and verification requirements.

Are the $100 student credits OpenAI API credits?

No. They are ChatGPT credits that extend Codex usage and do not fund API calls on the developer platform.

Does the ChatGPT account email need to be my school email?

No. A personal ChatGPT account can be used, but SheerID still requires successful student verification, which may involve a university email and other details.

Can I share or sell the student offer?

No. OpenAI’s terms limit it to one verified eligible student and say it cannot be shared, transferred, or sold.
