GitHub Student Developer Pack: 2026 Status Guide

Current status: GitHub continues to offer education benefits to verified students. Approval is based on current enrollment, not on possession of an EDU-looking inbox. Individual partner offers change, may have separate terms, and should be checked inside GitHub Education after approval.

Who can apply?

GitHub requires enrollment in a degree- or diploma-granting course of study, a personal GitHub account, and a minimum age of 13. Applicants normally provide a school-issued email when their institution supplies one and may be asked for dated proof of enrollment. GitHub decides whether an institution and submitted evidence are acceptable.

How to apply correctly

  1. Sign in to your personal GitHub account and enable two-factor authentication if prompted.
  2. Open Settings, then Education benefits, and start the student application.
  3. Select the school you actually attend and provide its issued email address or accepted enrollment evidence.
  4. Explain how you plan to use GitHub and submit the application.
  5. After approval, return to Education benefits to activate available products.

Copilot Student

Verified students can activate the current Copilot Student plan at no charge. GitHub's current plan comparison describes unlimited code completions with an allowance of GitHub AI Credits, while chat, agent usage, and model choice are limited compared with higher paid plans. Eligibility is re-evaluated periodically.

Why temporary EDU mail does not work as enrollment proof

EduMails is a temporary inbox service, not an accredited institution. A temporary address cannot establish enrollment and should not be used to cycle applications after rejection. False school claims or repeated applications can violate GitHub's terms and may put a long-lived developer account at risk.
